Nasa remembers 9/11 with satellite images of World Trade Center attack

NASA has remembered the 9/11 attack by releasing a series of images which show the devastating aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center from space. Tuesday marked 17 years since al-Qaeda terrorists flew planes into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in what is the biggest attack on American soil.

The satellite images, taken from the International Space Station show huge plumes of smoke rising from Manhattan, where the Twin Towers were shortly after the plane crashed into the buildings. As the buildings collapsed, the images show the smoke getting bigger and smoke and ash can still be seen billowing from the wreckage the following day.

Astronaut Frank Culbertson, who NASA says was “the only American off the planet” at the time of the attack was aboard the International Space Station when the attack occurred.
